During excavations of ancient settlements, archaeologists have repeatedly found bows. According to scientists, it was invented over 40 thousand years ago. Since then, the bow design and the materials used have changed a lot. Some models in appearance do not even remotely resemble their predecessors, a wooden stick with a bowstring. Despite all the differences, they have one goal to send an arrow over a long distance. Now bows are used for almost the same purposes as before: hunting, sports, and armed conflicts in some tribes. The famous commander Alexander the Great was forced to stop advancing into Central Asia because of horse archers. They used previously unseen warfare techniques. On fast horses, they circled around the inactive Macedonian army and showered them with arrows from afar. They did not engage in close combat; attacks were carried out even at night. Having suffered huge losses and found no opposition to such tactics, the commander had to stop his military campaign.

During the Second World War, British Jack Churchill received the loud nickname Mad Jack. During all military operations, he used only a long English bow with arrows and a Scottish broadsword.
